Eye on Cebu: An Investment and Economic Summit

The Philippine Stock Exchange, Inc., in partnership with Bloomberg Philippines will be holding a FREE Investment and Economic Summit in Cebu entitled “Eye on Cebu.”

Cebu’s strategic location as a regional transport hub, along with its drivers for growth in the sectors of real estate, tourism and business process outsourcing triggered the rise of its revenues.  Investment by small and medium enterprises in the province also contributed to the growth of the Philippine economy. This has encouraged the PSE to establish the first provincial marketing office in September last year.

What is an Index?

An index is a measurement of the value of a batch of stocks. Basically it is a list of carefully selected companies of different industries, usually around 30, whose stocks are constantly monitored. The stock movements of these companies represent the general movement of market prices.

How are stocks classified?

Blue Chip Stocks:

These are stocks of stable, profitable and well-known public companies that have a long history of steady revenues and dividend payments. It exhibits modest but dependable returns and is relatively of lower risk. In the Philippines, the companies selling Blue Chip Stocks are most likely included in the PSE Composite Index (PSEi/Phisix).

Growth Stocks:

These are stock of corporations that has exhibited faster-than-average gains in earnings over the last few years and s expected to continue to show high levels of profit growth. They usually don't pay dividends because they reinvest their earnings for growth. When they have a setback on bad news or some other problem, their share price can also go down dramatically.

Speculative Stocks:

When a new investor thinks of stock as "risky", speculative stocks are usually considered here. Your chances of losing a lot of money are great, and your chances of making a lot of money are small.

How much do I need to Invest?

The amount of money you need to start investing is determined using a board lot system. This is basically table that plots the minimum number of shares an investor can buy or sell at a specific price range. Therefore, the minimum amount of initial investment varies and will depend on the market price of the stock as well as its corresponding board lot. Prices of stocks move through a scale of minimum price fluctuations.

How do you make money in the stock market?

There are two major ways to make money grow in stock market:

Where can I trade stocks?

Tektite Trading Floor in the Ortigas Business District
In the Philippines, the only operating stock market is The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE). It has two trading floors – PSE Centre in Ortigas, Pasig City and PSE Plaza in Ayala, Makati City. Transactions are made daily – from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. except Saturdays, Sundays, legal holidays and days when the Central Bank Clearing Office is closed.

Several markets abroad are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the NASDAQ, The American Stock Exchange (AMEX), Tokyo Stock Exchange (Japan), Shenzhen Stock Exchange (China). Click here to see a list of major stock markets in the world.

How to Compute Transaction Fees

This section explains how much an entire stock transaction would cost you, starting from the price of your selected stock down to the fees that you need to pay for broker's services and, of course, the dreaded tax.

All about Dividend dates

In the previous section How to make money in stocks, we mentioned DIVIDEND as one way for you to grow your money in the stock market. This type of payout does not happen every day so you need to know some of the important dates and terms that are used to get your precious slice of the pie.

What are Stocks?

A stock is a partial ownership in a corporation. When you purchase shares of a stock, you purchase ownership in that corporation, with rights to share in its profits.

So why does corporations sell its ownership? When a corporation needs to raise money for expansion or improvements, they will sell shares on the open markets.

There are two (2) types of stocks traded in the market – Common and Preferred.

Common Stocks – These stocks are usually purchased for participation in the profits and control of ownership and management of the company. Owners typically are entitled to vote on the selection of directors and other important matters as well as to receive dividends on their holdings. However, they have the last claim on dividends and are the last to collect in case of corporate liquidation.

Preferred Stocks – These are stocks issued by a firm in which shareholders are given preference over common stockholders. They have limited rate of return or dividend and a specified limited redemption and liquidation price. Preferred stock usually carries no voting rights.

Are there any risks involved in stock investing?

Yes, risk will always be a part of any investment. Note that stocks are the most volatile form of investment. Meaning, it is subject to sudden changes. What good in stocks is that it actually is highly liquid – meaning, you can quickly convert your stocks shares into cash any time at your discretion.
